SECURITY FILE 004 - THE GHOST
SECURITY FILE 004 The Ghost on the 5th Floor
Location: Regional Hospital
Shift: Night
Incident: Unaccounted presence in restricted maintenance wing
Hospitals at night have a very specific kind of silence.
It’s never fully quiet. There’s always the hum of fluorescent lights, the distant beep of monitors, and the endless stretch of empty hallways.
My job that night was simple: routine rounds. Walk the floors, check the rooms, secure unused areas, and make sure everything was in order.
Easy enough.
I started making my rounds on the upper floors, moving through the quiet corridors. Every now and then, a faint noise would echo down the hall, or a light would flicker overhead. Standard hospital atmosphere. Nothing to get worked up about.
Then I reached the 5th floor.
I was walking down one of the long wings, checking doors one by one. As I approached a room halfway down the hall, I noticed the light inside was on.
I pushed the door open slightly and looked in.
A man was lying in the bed, resting.
Everything looked normal. Just a patient getting through the night.
"Goodnight," I said softly, not wanting to disturb him too much.
"Goodnight," he replied, his voice calm and low.
I nodded, reached for the switch, dimmed the lights so he could sleep, and pulled the door shut.
Just another routine check.
I moved on to the next room down the hall. It was completely empty. I checked the windows, pulled the door closed, and locked it from the outside.
Job done for this section.
I turned around and started heading back down the corridor toward the main elevators. As I passed the room I had just left moments ago, I stopped.
The light was on again.
Did he get up? I thought. Maybe he needs assistance.
I opened the door and stepped inside to check if everything was okay.
The room was completely empty.
The bed was neatly made. No sheets ruffled, no blankets tossed aside, no sign that anyone had been lying there seconds ago.
I stood there for a second, my mind trying to make sense of what I was looking at.
Maybe he had just stepped out? The toilet was right next to the bed. I checked inside the small bathroom, empty.
I walked back out into the hallway and looked both ways. Long, brightly lit, and completely deserted. There was nowhere he could have gone that quickly without me seeing or hearing him.
A strange feeling started setting in, but I pushed it down. There had to be a logical explanation.
I took the elevator straight down to the main security office to report it.
I walked in, sat down, and mentioned it to the night dispatcher. "Hey, just letting you know, I saw a patient up on the 5th floor in the east wing. He’s up and walking around, but when I went back to check on him, the room was empty."
The dispatcher paused and looked up from the monitor.
"The 5th floor east wing?" he asked.
"Yeah."
He looked at me for a second, completely deadpan.
"That entire wing is shut down for maintenance. The whole floor is completely empty."
The room went quiet.
"I spoke to him," I said. "He said goodnight back to me."
Without another word, two of us headed straight back up to the 5th floor.
We walked down the long hall together, keycards out, flashlight in hand. We stopped at the room.
The light was off.
We opened the door, flipped the main switch, and searched the entire space.
Nothing.
Just an empty hospital bed, bare walls, and the quiet hum of the building. We checked the entire wing, every room, every closet, every emergency exit. Locked, empty, and silent.
There was no one there.
I’ve dealt with aggressive crowds, break-ins, and unpredictable situations on night shifts before. Adrenaline makes sense when there’s something in front of you to face.
But standing in an empty, locked floor at three in the morning, knowing someone had answered me back just minutes earlier?
That was a completely different kind of shift.
