SECURITY FILE 003 - THE ESCAPE

Security File 003 - The Escape

Location: Refugee Camp

Shift: Daytime

Incident: The Escape

Some calls are routine.

Some are anything but.

That night, our security team - always two men per team - was asked to assist a social worker with removing a refugee from his room.

The resident was known for being aggressive, so the social workers wanted security present while they spoke to him and escorted him outside.

We met the social worker at the agreed meeting point and walked together toward the building.

As we approached, we noticed him.

He was standing upstairs, looking at us through the window of his room on the first floor.

At least we knew where he was.

The social worker called up to him.

"Hey, stay in your room. We're coming upstairs."

We went up first, with the social worker behind us.

When we reached the room, we knocked.

The door opened.

But it wasn't him.

His roommate was standing there.

We asked where the resident was.

He wasn't there.

That was strange.

We entered the room and started looking around.

Under the beds.

Inside the lockers.

Everywhere we could reasonably check.

Nothing.

We checked the toilets and showers, which were located separately just outside the room.

Still nothing.

The guy had apparently disappeared.

And that was particularly strange because we had literally seen him looking at us through the window only moments earlier.

Then someone gave us a clue.

Another resident had seen what happened.

Apparently, the man had climbed out through the very same window we had seen him standing behind.

He had jumped from the first floor.

We hadn't heard anything.

We hadn't seen him leave.

By the time we realized what had happened, he was already gone.

Later, we heard that he had injured his arm during the jump.

The following day, he reported the injury to the social workers.

Apparently, jumping out of a first-floor window wasn't enough to get him out of the situation entirely.

He still had to leave the location and was transferred to another camp.

It was one of those situations where everything seemed straightforward at first.

We knew where he was.

We knew where his room was.

We had security with us.

And yet, by the time we reached his door...

he was already gone.

Sometimes, the hardest person to escort out of a building is the one who decides to leave before you even get there.
